Currently, Oklahoma ranks in the bottom 10 nationally for economic well-being and education. Add to this that a third of the population lives in under-funded rural areas, and it’s no surprise that many Oklahoma schools are lacking the resources to instill a strong foundation in all things STEAM and children are missing valuable opportunities. With the tools, expertise, and resources needed to provide STEAM activities being largely unavailable in public schools serving low income communities, children tend to have few opportunities and this combined with lack of education enrichment experiences is an one of the predictors of the achievement gap.
Far too many kids in Oklahoma simply don’t have the same access to unique learning experiences as kids in more prosperous areas. This persistent inequality in education threatens our collective future.
To counter this, the STEAM Machine, an Oklahoma non-profit, brings all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) packed on a bus and delivered right to the school parking lot. Our goal is designed to help eliminate inequities by bringing learning opportunities to schools lacking the resources for such programs so they get the benefits of an innovation lab without having to build one. Our work inspires students to use their hands and minds, while educating and empowering teachers with the knowledge and competence to continue our work after we’ve gone. We are igniting the spark for future scientists, engineers and programmers – one student at a time.
Oklahoma is ready for positive change, and the STEAM Machine is bringing it - so ALL ABOARD!
