The COALITION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN OKLAHOMA (CASMEO) is a nonprofit 501 c3 organization that began as a project funded by the Exxon Education Foundation through the Mathematical Sciences Education Board in December 1990.
In April 2014, Governor Fallin signed into law legislation to address
Oklahoma's shortage of qualified workers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Senate Bill 1181, by Sen. Ron Sharp and Rep. Justin Wood, provides criteria for designation as a STEM community or region.
CASMEO's mission is to facilitate access to sustainable STEAM programming to counter the effects of trauma on children intentionally. Oklahoma leads the nation in levels of childhood trauma, and our children who suffer adversity have a greater likelihood of negative and dysfunctional trajectories later in life. CASMEO provides opportunities to overcome childhood trauma by helping students and adults create a better future via STEAM.
